Dry Eye Treatment in Brisbane
What is dry eye syndrome?
Red, sore, and watering eyes affect thousands of Brisbane residents every year. Whether it's from our subtropical climate, air conditioning, or hours spent looking at screens, these symptoms can signal anything from infection and inflammation to allergy, blepharitis, or dry eye syndrome. Our team of ophthalmologists at Eastside Eye specialise in getting to the root cause of your discomfort, because the right diagnosis means the right treatment.
Did you know? IPL therapy is the gold standard for treating meibomian gland dysfunction. Over 250,000 treatments are performed in Australia annually with excellent success rates.
What are the symptoms of dry eye?
Dry eye syndrome often develops gradually, making it difficult to notice in its early stages. Common symptoms our patients report include:
- Excessive watering or tear production
- Burning or stinging sensations, particularly in the morning
- A gritty or sandy feeling in the eyes
- Light sensitivity and glare intolerance
- Intermittent blurred vision that clears with blinking
- Eye fatigue and discomfort, especially later in the day
If you're experiencing these symptoms, our ophthalmologists can provide a comprehensive assessment to determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
How is dry eye diagnosed?
At our Carindale clinic, we employ advanced diagnostic technology to thoroughly assess your condition. Our ophthalmologists use specialised imaging to examine your meibomian glands and evaluate tear film stability. We measure tear production rates and assess the quality of your tear composition. This comprehensive evaluation typically takes 30 minutes and provides valuable insights into your eye health. Our doctors take time to explain the findings and answer any questions you may have about your condition.
How is dry eye treated?
There are many treatments available including eyelid heat, massage, drops, anti-inflammatories, serum tears, Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, and punctal plugs. Our Brisbane ophthalmologists have each of these treatments available at Eastside Eye and will offer them based on the severity of your condition.
Steps can be taken to treat this condition. At Eastside Eye Specialist Care, we have intense pulsed light therapy (IPL) which is the most effective treatment for this condition.
What type of dry eye treatment is right for me?
If your ophthalmologist recommends treating your dry eyes, we'll help you select the appropriate treatment plan to match your condition and lifestyle goals.
Your treatment will be customised based on the underlying cause and severity of your dry eye. This means your treatment plan may include lubricating drops, IPL therapy, or a combination of treatments tailored specifically to your needs.
What happens during IPL treatment?
First, our nurses make sure you're feeling comfortable. Then, protective eyewear is applied to ensure your safety during the procedure.
During IPL therapy, your treatment is carefully delivered using custom-calibrated light pulses. This typically takes 10 to 15 minutes and most patients experience immediate improvement. Your eye is then examined to ensure the treatment has been successful before you're cleared to go home.
You'll have been given post-treatment care instructions and a script for eye drops when booking your treatment so you'll be familiar with the details. By the next day, you can resume most normal activities and enjoy improved eye comfort!
